Rafael
Nadal will challenge for his first Australian Open singles final after a
marathon five set victory over Fernando Verdasco in the semifinals 6-7 (4-7),
6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 6-4.
Nadal
continued to use efficiency as his greatest asset as he won 72 percent of his
first serves and hit just 25 unforced errors in a match that lasted more than
five hours. While Verdasco hammered out 20 aces and hit 95 winners he was done
in by 76 unforced errors.
Nadal
has won five Grand Slam singles titles including four at the French Open and
his first Wimbledon title last year. Three of his French Open titles and his
Wimbledon crown came at the expense of Roger Federer. Nadal’s best finish at
the Australian Open was a semi-final appearance last year.
