The
2009 Australian Open women’s singles final, matching American Serena Williams
and Russian Dinara Safina, the number two and three seeds entering the Grand
Slam event.
Both
Williams and Safina are playing their best tennis of the tournament as Williams
has found her serve while Safina has continued to take advantage of the unforced
errors committed by her opponents.
Williams
knocked off Elena Dementieva in the semifinals in straight sets to reach the finals
where she will be playing for her fourth career Australian Open singles title
and tenth career Grand Slam singles title. She has collected a career Grand
Slam with three U.S. Open titles, a French Open title, two Wimbledon titles,
and three Australian Open titles.
For
Safina, she is still searching for her first Grand Slam singles title but has
shown she belongs with big with big wins throughout the tournament including a
three set victory over crowd favorite Jelena Dokic in the quarterfinals. She
reached the finals at the French Open last year, her best performance at a
Grand Slam singles event.
The
finals of the 2009 Australian Open is set for Sunday, the time has yet to be
released.
