Opposition
leader Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change party has agreed
to join a unity government in Zimbabwe, possibly ending a month’s long struggle
to find a resolution to a failed power-sharing agreement with President Robert
Mugabe of the ruling ZANU-PF party.
Tsvangirai
will join the government next month when he is officially sworn in as Zimbabwe’s
prime minister. That ceremony has been scheduled for February 11.
While
the MDC has agreed to join the unity government the debate over what stalled the
power-sharing agreement remains. Tsvangirai refused to join Mugabe after the President
appointed ZANU-PF ministers to key cabinet positions, leaving the MDC with what
has been viewed as lesser appointments.
The
decision to join the unity government was brought on by several factors one of
those being Southern African leaders who encouraged Tsvangirai to accept the
deal and then work to fix the problems.
Leaders
of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have created a
power-sharing timeline that includes a constitutional amendment that would pass
the deal on Feb. 5, the swearing in of Tsvangirai and other MDC deputies on
Feb. 11 and the remaining ministers and deputies taking office on Feb. 13.
The
decision to form the unity government was seen as vital to Zimbabwe as several
countries have refused to provide aid to the country until the government is stabilized.
Zimbabwe is currently facing a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 3,000
people, hyper-inflation that has left their currency all but worthless and health
and sanitation sectors in shambles.
