The
2009 Australian Open men’s finals is set and it promises to be an epic battle
as the two biggest names in men’s tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal,
square off once again.
Nadal
entered the Australian Open as the world’s number one ranked player while
Federer carried the number two ranking and their showdown in the finals is yet
another chapter in what is becoming one of the greatest rivalries in Grand Slam
history.
For
Federer a win on Sunday would tie him with Pete Sampras for most career Grand
Slam singles titles. Federer has won 13 Grand Slam singles titles; five at
Wimbledon, five at the U.S. Open and three at the Australian Open.
Federer
and Nadal have met in a Grand Slam singles finals six times with Nadal holding
a 4-2 advantage. Both of Federer’s victories came at Wimbledon while Nadal
knocked off Federer three times at the French Open and once at Wimbledon. Nadal
is the only player Federer has ever lost to in a Grand Slam singles finals.
Nadal
is coming off an unbelievable five-set, five-hour match against fellow Spaniard
Fernando Verdasco in the semifinals and he’ll be facing a fresh Federer who is
coming off a straight set win over Andy Roddick in the semifinals.
Nadal
has never won the Australian Open title but has collected four titles at the French
Open and a Wimbledon title as well. Prior to this year Nadal’s best finish at the
Australian Open was a semifinal appearance last year.
The
Australian Open men’s final is set for Sunday but a time has yet to be
announced.
