Michael
Steele, the former Lt. Gov. of Maryland, has become the first African American
to lead the Republican Party after members of the Republican National Committee
elected him party chief following six rounds of voting.
Steele
emerged victorious after receiving 91 votes from the 168-member Republican
National Committee on Friday. After five rounds Steele had collected 79 votes,
six short of the simple majority needed and after Saul Anuzis dropped out he
picked up an additional 12 votes in the sixth round.
The
50-year-old had served as Lt. Gov. under Governor Robert Ehrlich from 2003
through 2007, becoming the first African American to serve in a state-wide
office in Maryland.
