Alaska’s Mount Redoubt Volcano “Heading Toward an Eruption”

Geophysicist Peter Cervelli with the Alaska Volcano Observatory says “every indication” shows Mount Redoubt is set to erupt.

Cervelli tells CNN it is unclear when the eruption will occur. “I would not be surprised to see it erupt anytime. We’re going to know it when we see it,” he says.

The observatory released a statement Friday saying Redoubt has been “more energetic than that of the previous several days. However, it is still less vigorous than that observed last week.”

The 10,197 foot peak is located around 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska’s most populated city. Mount Redoubt last erupted in December 1989 and lasted 4 months. Scientists believe this eruption could be “similar to or smaller than the one that occurred in 1989-90.”
