Australian Open 2009 Finals Results: Rafael Nadal Edges Roger Federer for First Hard Court Grand Slam Title

Rafael Nadal has moved one step closer to a career Grand Slam after yet another epic showdown with Roger Federer in which he knocked off the former No. 1 in five sets 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-2 in the finals of the Australian Open.

Nadal was able to take advantage of Federer’s poor service game as the Swede managed to get just 52 percent of his first serves in play and his second serve was picked apart. Federer committed a staggering 64 unforced errors in the match and remains one Grand Slam singles title away from tying Pete Sampras for the most in a career.

Nadal has now won six Grand Slam singles titles including four at the French Open and his first Wimbledon title last year. Three of his French Open titles and his Wimbledon crown came at the expense of Roger Federer. Nadal’s best finish at the Australian Open prior to 2009 was a semi-final appearance last year.
