Israeli PM Ehud Olmert Vows More Strikes in Gaza Following Latest Rocket Attacks

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said the latest rocket attacks launched by Palestinians in southern Israel will be met with a “disproportionate” response in Gaza, possibly signaling the end of a tenuous ceasefire created two weeks ago.

Olmert’s declaration came shortly after a pair of rockets hit southern Israel and three Israelis were injured by a mortar barrage. The Israeli PM vowed, “"We will not agree to return to the old rules of the game and we will act according to new rules that will guarantee that we are not dragged into an incessant tit-for-tat war that will not allow normal life in the south of the country.”

Egypt has been trying to broker a peace deal between Hamas militants and Israelis and while the two sides are believed to be working on an agreement the conditions of that deal remain unmet. Hamas has called for an end to Israel’s blockade of Gaza while Israel has demanded an end to all rocket attacks and the destruction of tunnels used by Palestinians to smuggle in weapons.

Israel launched a massive three-week campaign in Gaza last month in which more than 1,300 Palestinians were killed and the region was left in ruins.
