Iceland has announced that their new coalition government will be headed by Johanna Sigurdardottir, the first openly gay leader of the modern world.
Sigurdardottir, a member of the Social Democratic Alliance, was named new prime minister and will take over the role abandoned by former PM Geir Haarde who resigned last month after his coalition cabinet failed to win the confidence of citizens who continue to mass protests over the crumbling economic conditions in the country.
The new coalition government acknowledged Iceland’s growing problems, “The government inherits enormous difficulties due to the banking and systemic collapse as well as considerable and rapidly increasing foreign debts and liabilities of the national economy.”
Sigurdardottir, 66, will head the new government until elections are held in May.
