Rafael Nadal Wins 6th French Open Title
Nadal Beats Federer in French Open Men's Final
On Sunday, Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal won his 6th French Open title by defeating Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1 in what proved to be a downright thrilling match.
Nadal is now the second player ever to win 6 French Open titles, the other being Bjorn Borg. Nadal is also now the second-youngest player ever to win 10 Grand Slam titles, the first being none other than Borg again.
"To win this final against one of the best players in the world and in history is something which is really fantastic for me," said Nadal, who would have lost his #1 ranking if he had lost the match. "It's one of my most beautiful dreams."
Coming off of a great win against rising star Novak Djokovic, Federer was hoping to win his second ever French Open title with his first ever win against Nadal in the French Open final.
Federer started off very strong, breaking Nadal in his first service game to take a 3-0 lead. At one point, Federer led 5-2. But then Nadal went on to win seven straight games.
"As it often happens, he is the best on clay," said Federer. "He proved it once again."
Nadal is now 17-8 against Federer overall and 6-2 against his main rival in Grand Slam finals. Furthermore, Nadal improved his all-time record at Roland Garros to an amazing 45-1.
The match might have been even closer than it was if Federer had not committed so many unforced errors. His 56 was more than double Nadal's 27.
"For today, we played, I think, a good match," said Nadal after the match. "Sorry for that and well done to his team."
