The United States military announced Monday the deaths of 5 American soldiers. All of the fatalities occurred Monday in central Iraq. The military did not release any other details, including the circumstances surrounding each of the deaths. The military will release the names of the soldiers when the next of kin is notified of their deaths.
Two unnamed Iraqi security officials reported the soldiers died when insurgents fired rockets at the Camp Victory Army base in southeastern Baghdad. At least 5 other American soldiers were injured, according to the officials.
Monday’s incident was the single deadliest attack again U.S. soldiers in Iraq this year. By January 2012, all American soldiers are set to withdraw from Iraq. The Iraqi government is currently discussing whether to request soldiers remain after the January 1 deadline.
