Michael Phelps Apologizes for Marijuana Picture

Michael Phelps has apologized for a picture published by News of the World that shows him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. The Olympic champ released a statement Sunday saying his behavior was “regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.”

The picture was released last week along with a story claiming Phelps smoked weed with college students at a University of South Carolina party last November. News of the World alleged that Phelps’ aids offered them a “raft of extraordinary incentives” to not publish the story and picture.

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again,” Phelps said in the statement.

The United States Olympic Committee also released a statement regarding the photo. “We are disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps.
 Michael is a role model, and he is well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people,” the statement reads. “In this instance, regrettably, he failed to fulfill those responsibilities. 
Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. 
We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion.”

This isn’t Phelps first time apologizing for his actions. In 2004, when he was 19, Phelps was arrested for a DUI. He pleaded guilty to the charge and apologized to his fans.
