New York Congressman Anthony Weiner has admitted to posting a picture showing his bulging crotch in a pair of boxers on Twitter. Weiner made the confession during a press conference in Manhattan on Monday.
"To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it. I'm deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife, and our family, my constituents, my friends, my supporters and my staff," he said. "I lied because I was ashamed at what I had done, and I didn't want to get caught."
Weiner initially claimed his Twitter account had been hacked and someone else posted the inappropriate picture. He now claims the photo was intended to be a “joke” in a private message, but he accidentally posted it to his main feed. "This was a very dumb thing to do," he said at the press conference. "[It was] a destructive thing to do.”
Weiner, who said he will not resign, also admitted to carrying on “inappropriate conversations” with at least six women over “Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and occasionally on the phone" within the past three years.
"I have made terrible mistakes," Weiner said. "I have not been honest with myself or my family. ... I should not have done this, and I should not have done this particularly when I was married."
Weiner said he has “no intention” of separating from his wife, Huma Abedin. "I love my wife very much. We’ve been through a great deal together and will weather this,” he told reporters.
Although Weiner said he did not use official resources in any of his inappropriate conversations, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi called for an “Ethics Committee investigation to determine whether any official resources were used or any other violation of House rules occurred.” Weiner said he would “fully cooperate.”
