Kobe Bryant was 19/31 shooting and was 20-20 from the line for 61 points, Pau Gasol finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds and Lamar Odom grabbed 14 boards of his own as the Los Angeles Lakers (38-9) went on the road and knocked off the New York Knicks (21-26) 126-117 on Monday night.
Bryant finished the first half with 34 points as the Lakers built a 65-54 lead at the break. The Knicks climbed back to within 69-67 in the third quarter but the Lakers used a 15-4 run to boost their advantage to 84-71 and NY was never closer than five points the rest of the way.
Bryant’s 61 points set a record at the current Madison Square Garden arena. Midway through the fourth quarter he past Michel Jordan’s 55 for most points by an opponent and with less than three minutes in the game he eclipsed Bernard King and his 60 points scored on Christmas Day in 1984 for the MSG record. The current MSG opened in 1968.
Los Angeles shot 52% from the field and outrebounded New York 52-41 on the night.
