D Day – will now have new meaning for one Houston area charity. The YMCA of Greater Houston stormed the beaches and has won the “Cadillac Cares” Houston Challenge, sponsored by the Houston Area Cadillac Dealers.
The YMCA will receive a $50,000 advertising campaign. The other participating charities – the Children’s Museum of Houston and the Houston Food Bank – will each receive $1,000 cash donations.
Throughout the month long challenge, each charity had its biography and a voting button on the Houston Area Cadillac Dealers Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HoustonAreaCadillacDealers. Voters cast their vote by liking one of the three charities every day from May 9 through June 6, 2011.
The three charities touch Houston residents in diverse ways:
• The Children’s Museum of Houston offers a multitude of exhibits that engage kids in the ultimate learning experience. Founded in 1980 by a group of Houston parents who hoped to elevate early childhood development to a community-wide priority, the museum now serves more than 850,000 people annually. http://www.cmhouston.org
• The Houston Food Bank is the largest source of food for hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. A network of nearly 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding a total of 137,000 people each week, provides more than 65 million pounds of food and prepared meals annually. http://houstonfoodbank.org
• The YMCA of Greater Houston is committed to putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice. YMCA programs, activities and relationships teach and model Judeo-Christian values in order to strengthen kids, families and communities. Caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith are core values evident in all that we do.

“We are so pleased that these charities were part of a program that helped to educate Houstonians on three very worthy causes. We are overwhelmed by the response of the Cadillac Cares Houston Challenge. We don’t look at this challenge as winners or losers. We look at the Cadillac Cares Houston Challenge as having helped focus attention on giving back to our community,” states Tom D’Angelo, regional marketing manager for Cadillac. “We want to encourage volunteerism and celebrate the Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Food Bank and YMCA of Greater Houston who make our world a better place.”
The Challenge was successful on many fronts:
• Houston Area Cadillac Dealers increased their Facebook fan base by over 2,000 new fans
• The participating charities increased their Facebook fans
• Raised awareness and Facebook fan base for the charities
o Through personal stories and social media
o By educating new prospects on the charities’ background and missions
o Cross pollination between charities
A case study will be written on “Cadillac Cares” Houston Challenge this summer.
