Iran Launches First Domestic Satellite

According to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran has “officially achieved a presence in space” after successfully launching its first domestic satellite.

While some have questioned Iran’s intentions for launching the satellite Ahmadinejad has insisted the reasons were peaceful. Iran has been sanctioned by the United Nations because of a belief that they are attempting to build a nuclear bomb.

Shortly after the launch, said to be for telecommunications and research purposes, Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told Reuters news agency, “Iran’s satellite technology is for purely peaceful purposes and to meet the needs of the country.”
