Teen Arrested in Greece for Hacking Interpol, FBI

A teenager was arrested in Athens, Greece on Tuesday after apparently hacking into the websites of Interpol and several United States agencies, including the Pentagon and FBI. The unidentified 18-year-old is also accused of obtaining information from personal computers and using it to open new credit cards.

Greek police say the suspect, who used the name “nsplitter,” had over 120 credit cards, $11,700 in cash and investments in nearly 50 companies on the Athens stock exchange at the time of his arrest. Authorities seized computers, computer equipment and a homemade explosive device from the teen’s home.  He is due in court Thursday to face charges of computer fraud, forgery and illegal violation of privacy among others.

Authorities began searching for the hacker after he breached Interpol’s site three years ago. He struck the National Security Agency, the FBI and the Pentagon in 2009.

“He has carried out such strikes all over the world from his home," said Greek cybercrime squad leader Manolis Sfakianakis. "Interpol is the basic one, and government sites in the US. He acted alone, though he has worked with others before.”
