Millard
Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity International, died early Tuesday
morning after a brief illness. Fuller was 74.
Fuller,
along with his wife Linda Fuller, founded Habitat for Humanity International in
1976 and since that time the non-profit organization has provided housing for
more than 1.5 million people in over 3,000 communities.
In
1996 President Bill Clinton presented Fuller with the Presidential Medal of
Freedom, noting Habitat had become “the most successful continuous community
service project in the history of the United States."
In
2005 Fuller left Habitat following a bitter dispute with the board in which he was
accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior with a female employee. Fuller
denied the allegations and criticized the members of the board, declaring them
to be more interested in money rather than Christian values.
Fuller
had been suffering from chest congestion for nearly a month and was on his way
to the hospital around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday when he died.
