Soccer’s
governing body, FIFA, has confirmed that they have received 11 bids for the right
to host the 2018 World Cup.
Australia
is thought to be an early favorite to host the 2018 World Cup but they will
face stiff competition from England, Russia and the United States among several
other countries vying for the world’s most watched event.
FIFA
received joint bids from Spain and Portugal along with the Netherlands and
Belgium but joint bids are not in favor with FIFA president Sepp Blatter who
has encouraged countries who have the ability to stage the World Cup on their
own to submit an individual bid.
Among
the other countries that submitted bids to host the 2018 World Cup; Mexico,
Qatar, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea.
Voting
for the host country will not take place until Dec. 2010. The 2010 World Cup is being held in South Africa while the 2014 World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
