New York City proposes bill to protect hotel workers from sexual harassment

By: Daun Lee

The sexual assault scandal that rocked NYC, involving Dominique Strauss-Kahn has brought to light the sexual abuses that hotel maids often suffer at the hands of hotel guests. The Hotel Association of New York will meet with hotel workers’ union to discuss legislation intended to protect maids from abuse.

After the scandal involving Strauss-Kahn broke hotels maids across the city began to speak out about the abuses they have suffered. In spite of the efforts of the EEOC and sexual harassment attorneys, many men and women are victimized by inappropriate sexual behavior.

The legislation proposed by two Democratic Senators would require improved sexual harassment training for hotel and motel employees, along with clear system to report incidents of abuse. The bill would also protect employees from retaliation for reporting sexual abuses. There has been some talk of including panic buttons for maids who may be in danger of being abused or harmed.

Even though sexually harassing an individual at work is clearly illegal, many people still engage in the behavior. Sometimes the only way to stop the harassment is to hire a sexual harassment lawyer.

Inappropriate touching and lewd comments make the workplace hostile, and can lead to a lack of productivity. Although most businesses have policies that are intended to protect their employees from sexual abuse, it still occurs at an alarming rate; more than half of women report they have been harassed at least once while on the job. The diligent work of sexual harassment attorneys can stop this from happening.
