A wedding celebration in eastern Afghanistan turned in to a tragedy Thursday when masked gunmen opened fire on the partygoers. Local officials say 9 people, including the groom, were killed in the attack while 5 other people were wounded.
A Nangarhar province spokesman said the gunmen, who have been linked to the Taliban, wore masks and used AK-47 rifles when they stormed the house where the party was being held. “Nine people were killed and five others injured last night when armed opposition militants attacked a wedding party in Dur Baba district," said spokesman Abdulzia Ahmadzai.
The party was targeted because the groom was the cousin of district chief Hamisha Gul Muslim. A member of the groom’s family said the attackers accused Muslim of “being with the government and cooperating with NATO forces.”
