Gadolinium MRI Contrast Dye Information Provided by Lawyer Central

Lawyer Central has recently updated its Gadolinium Contrast Dye Resource Center, which provides information to consumers about the risks associated with the use of gadolinium based MRI contrast dyes. Although gadolinium contrast dyes pose no serious risk for most individuals, those with kidney problems may be unable to quickly eliminate the gadolinium from their bodies following the contrast dye injection for an MRI. This prolonged exposure to gadolinium can lead to the development of a condition known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF).

Before the recent discovery of the potential side effects of gadolinium, doctors praised the element because it allowed for enhanced imaging in MRIs. Gadolinium produces a visible contrast in blood vessels, organs and tissues, which aids medical professionals in effectively viewing tumors or abnormal tissues. In the United States, gadolinium was manufactured by GE Healthcare, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Tyco/Mallinckrodt and Bracco Diagnostics under the following brand names: Magnevist, MultiHance, Omniscan, OptiMARK and ProHance.

Although gadolinium has useful properties in the medical field, it also poses health risks for patients with kidney conditions. Recent studies have shown a link between gadolinium and NSF, the potentially life-threatening disease that causes fibrosis of the skin, eyes, joints and internal organs. The first diagnosis of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis occurred in 1997. In serious cases, it can lead to immobility and breathing difficulties, with the potential to be fatal. This is a relatively new disease and no cure has been discovered yet. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued three warnings about the effects of gadolinium between June 2006 and May 2007. In addition, several lawsuits have been filed aimed at the manufacturers of gadolinium contrast dye alleging that these manufacturers failed to warn consumers about its risks and failed to adequately test it.
