Substance abuse is a problem plaguing many American families and for those attempting to cope with the problem of drug abuse, it affects nearly every facet of life.
Unfortunately, many times the types of substances abused by young people are ones commonly found or easily acquired. The newest substances to emerge on the drug front are chemicals termed as “bath salts”, a potentially deadly combination of substances whose high has been compared to cocaine coupled with hallucinations.
“These products are clearly not intended for bathing,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “In fact, these substances aren’t even intended for human consumption. Unfortunately, there are ways to use a product other than its intended purpose and when trying to get high, it’s astounding the ways that individuals, particularly youngsters, learn to manipulate otherwise legal substances to produces the desired effect. We need to help those individuals utilize their creative juices for innovations that are productive and make society better, as a whole. Vigilance and communication is key.”
Bath salts are commonly sold at smoke shops, gas stations, tattoo and piercing parlors and are marketed under a variety of names such as Ivory Wave, Bolivian Bath Blue Silk, Charge+, Ivory Snow, and Ocean Burst, to name a few. Immediate effects of bath salts include paranoia, agitation, hallucinations and chest pain. In addition, the potential for suicide when using these substances and for days after seems to be an increased, ongoing issue.
