A total of twenty-one bodies were found scattered alongside roads outside the Mexican city of Morelia on Wednesday. Mexican authorities announced the discovery on Thursday and said the killings are under investigation.
Jonathan Arredondo, a spokesman for the Michoacan state attorney general's office, told CNN it appeared some of the dead had been tortured. Others had gunshot wounds and show signs of strangulation. Arredondo said the victims had been dumped in three piles of five bodies and two piles of three bodies. Warning notes were left with each pile. “Because society asked for it, this is going to happen to those who continue to rob houses, kidnappers and rapists,” the notes read.
Authorities believe the killings may be the work of the La Familia drug cartel, which is based near Morelia. They often leave their victims alongside roads or hanging from bridges.
