The Williams Sisters Return to Tennis

Serena and Venus Williams Return After Injuries

Serena and Venus Williams are both returning to tennis after having taken nearly a year and several months off, respectively, because of injuries.

Serena took almost a year off because of a foot injury that required two operations and, eventually, a treatment for blood clots in her lung.

After not having played a match since she won last year's Wimbledon, Serena is set to begin her comeback at a grass-court tournament in Eastbourne, England next week.

"I am so excited to be healthy enough to compete again," said Williams in a statement. "These past 12 months have been extremely tough and character building. I have so much to be grateful for. I'm thankful to my family, friends, and fans for all of their support. Serena's back!"

Meanwhile, Serena's older sister Venus is also making a return to tennis after having injured her hip in this year's Australian Open (January). Her agent said that, like Serena, she will be making her comeback starting at Eastbourne and then Wimbledon.

The return of the Williams sisters could have a drastic effect on the landscape of professional women's tennis. The sisters pretty much dominated women's tennis during the 2000's. Since 2000, the sisters have won 20 combined Grand Slam singles titles. They have also both spent time ranked #1 in the world.
