Somali Pirates Release Ukrainian Vessel MV Faina after Ransom Paid

Somali pirates holding the Ukrainian vessel MV Faina for nearly five months have released the ship after a ransom was paid by the owners.

The MV Faina was carrying tanks, rocket launchers and small arms when it was hijacked by pirates as it traveled through the waters off the Somali coast en route to Kenya. Initially the pirates were said to have demanded $20 million for the release of the ship and its crew but it is believed just over $3 million was paid.

According to the pirates the ship was freed on Thursday after they agreed to accept the ransom and the MV Faina is expect to continue to its original destination of Mombasa.
