Justice Ruther Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery Thursday
for early stage pancreatic cancer. Justice Ginsburg, the only woman on the Supreme
Court, discovered she had cancer during a routine checkup in January.
“Justice Ginsburg had no symptoms prior to the incidental
discovery of the lesion during a routine annual checkup in late January at the
National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland,” the court said in a
statement.
A CAT scan “revealed a small tumor, approximately one
centimeter across, in the center of the pancreas.”
Ginsburg, 75, has had two bouts of cancer since President
Bill Clinton appointed her to the Supreme Court in 1993. She is currently at
the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain there
for seven to ten days.
