Zimbabwe Judge Drops Treason Charges Against MDC’s Secretary General Tendai Biti

Secretary general for Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, Tendai Biti, has had his treason case dropped after a judge dismissed the charges after declaring the prosecution had been unprepared to proceed.

Biti was arrested in June and accused of plotting to overthrow the ZANU-PF government led by President Robert Mugabe. The secretary general had been tied to a document that allegedly mapped out a plan to stage a coup but many have argued the authenticity of that document.

Biti was facing the death penalty had he been found guilty of the charges.

At the time of the arrest Mugab’e ZANU-PF part and Biti’s MDC partly, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, had been engaged in a bitter dispute over Zimbabwe’s presidential election.

To solve that dispute both sides had agreed on a power-sharing deal that would keep Mugabe as president while Tsvangirai would become prime minister. That deal sat on the table for more than five months as both sides accused the other of failure to abide by the agreement.

Earlier this week the two sides finally agreed to terms and on Feb. 11 Tsvangirai is expected to be sworn in as prime minister.
