The
family of an Italian woman who has been in a coma for 17 years will not be
allowed to disconnect her feeding tube despite a court ruling that supported their
position. Italy’s government has stepped in and ordered the hospital to
continue feeding the woman despite evidence that she had expressed a preference
for dying rather than being kept alive artificially.
Eluana
Englaro was left in a vegetative state following a car accident in 1992 and her
father had been fighting for the right to let her die since 1999. In November
Italy’s highest court ruled that the hospital could respect Englaro’s
preference and could stop feeding her.
While
the court ruled in favor of the family Italy’s government issued an emergency
decree on Friday stipulating that the hospital must continue feeding Englaro,
setting up a conflict between the government and the court.
Earlier
in the week Englaro had been transferred to a clinic that had agreed to remove the
feeding tube but that decision now appears blocked as the government takes the position
of the Roman Catholic Church which equates such an act as euthanasia, an act
equivalent to murder.
