Poisonous Teething Formula Kills at least 84 Nigerian Children, Death Toll Expected to Climb

A poisonous teething formula that has been found to contain a chemical found in antifreeze has been blamed for the deaths of 84 Nigerian children and health experts expect that number to climb as they continue to search for the tainted product.

The My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture was intended to stop the pain of teething for children but the tainted product caused children to endure fevers, convulsions, diarrhea and vomiting.

According to reports the product had been on the shelves since November and by early December there were 34 reports of deaths tied to the teething formula. While the product has been removed from stores health workers are now searching for already purchased products in an effort to avoid future deaths.

Researchers found that the poisonous formula contained high levels of diethylene glycol, a chemical commonly found in antifreeze and brake fluid.
