Mavericks Player Calls the Heat 'Classless'
DeShawn Stevenson Talks About Heat After Win
Dallas Mavericks guard DeShawn Stevenson called the actions of the Miami Heat team 'classless' after the Mavs won the 2011 NBA Finals.
"It makes me feel good, man, to beat him, to beat that Miami team," said Stevenson on Sunday. "The way they act, the way they treated Dirk [Nowitzki], all the things that they said were very classless. To win on the court the way we did it, it was wonderful."
Stevenson is referring to LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in particular, who appeared to mock Nowitzki by pretending to cough when being followed by cameras. Nowitzki himself called the incident "childish".
The feud between Stevenson and James in particular goes back to DeShawn's days with the Washington Wizards, who were eliminated from the postseason three times in a row by James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"A series like this gets personal," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle. "It gets personal because we have guys that say things, and they do it to get themselves going. Then they have the incident with the camera and the coughing and all that stuff. You get to Game 5, Game 6 and it becomes personal. Our guys took it personally."
Stevenson apparently felt disrespected by the Heat, so he basked in the glory of winning his first NBA title against James on his home court.
"I think we did it with class," said Stevenson. "They tried all kind of different things and made fun of us and were on the go-karts laughing after Game 1, like they already won the championship. To beat them on their court, it feels good."
