Increased risk of substance abuse for ADHD kids

ADHD children risk substance abuse as adults

The June publication of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry reports that girls and boys who have been diagnosed with ADHD have a significantly greater risk of substance abuse than those who don’t suffer with ADHD.

Although the study doesn’t probe deeply into factors surrounding the exact origins and correlations between ADHD and increased risk of substance abuse, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that the increased risk cannot be attributed to psychiatric disorders or family history.

“It’s important to know the risk factors for certain groups of individuals,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “That way, those who could potentially be affected know the warning signs and pitfalls to watch out for when dealing with ADHD. Counseling and education regarding the risks are important, particularly if there are any other issues surfacing.”

The recently published study followed 268 participants with ADHD and 220 control participants, both equally divided in gender. Nearly one-third of the ADHD participants developed some type of drug abuse problem, while only one-quarter of the control group developed the same problem.
