Summer boredom can usher in risky behaviors

Parental vigilence required during summer breaks

With the newest designer drug craze of bath salts spreading like wildfire among pre-teens, teens and college-aged students, it’s important to remember that, although summer can bring lots of family fun, it can also usher in a state of boredom that can be the catalyst for experimentation with drugs.

“It’s not uncommon to see an influx of admissions for substance abuse or alcohol abuse during the summer or immediately following the summer,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Summer can be a time of fun and being involved in many positive activities. However, it also brings with it a lot of downtime for young people. In addition, many times parents are faced with having to leave their children unsupervised for longer periods than they normally would during the academic year. Boredom can breed experimentation; that’s why it is so important for parents to make sure to watch for any potential warning signs of drug experimentation such as repeated requests for an increase in money allowances, erratic behavior, new friends, attitude changes and even something as drastic as valuables missing from the house. None of us wants to think that our children could become involved in substance abuse, but the reality is that they can. By being vigilant, we may be able to prevent the need for drug rehab for our children.”
