Police in Madagascar Open Fire on Protestors, at least 23 Dead

A demonstration by opposition protestors in Madagascar turned deadly on Saturday when police opened fire on the crowd, killing at least 23 and injuring several more.

The demonstration was organized by supporters of Mayor Andry Rajoelina who had been dismissed by President Marc Ravalomanana following a power struggle for leadership in the island. Rajoelina has accused Ravalomanana of misusing public funds and ruling as a dictator and on Tuesday he was dropped.

According to reports the crowd of protestors had been marching peacefully towards the president’s compound when riot police opened fire.

Rajoelina quickly pointed the finger of blame at Ravalomanana who in turn accused the former mayor of trying to organize a coup.
