Australian Fires Leave at least 14 Dead, Police Fear Number will Grow

Wildfires that have scorched four towns in Australia’s Victoria state have killed at least 14 people and destroyed more than 100 homes.

Police fear that as many as 40 people may have died in the wildfires that have been fueled by a devastating heat wave. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes while struggling to deal with the 117-degree temperatures that have left the landscape susceptible to the fires.

Officials in Victoria are saying the fires could be the worst in history as conditions continue to deteriorate and entire townships are being consumed by the flames.

Making things worse for the firefighters are the winds that have made the wildfires unpredictable.
