Somalia’s New President Arrives in Mogadishu, Travels to Presidential Palace

Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has taken up residence at the presidential palace, marking the first time the new Somali leader has been in the capital city of Mogadishu since he was elected president by parliamentary members last week.

Somali has lacked a central government for nearly two decades but Sheikh Sharif has expressed a desire to form an inclusive government that would bridge the gap between many rival groups. The moderate Islamist has said he would reach out to those who remain opposed to the United Nations efforts to end the civil war that has gripped the country.

While Sheikh Sharif arrived at the presidential palace amidst thousands of supporters the building was the target of several mortar attacks but no injuries were reported.
