A rare 1937 Bugatti sports car, one of only 17 built, is expected to fetch at least $4 million when it goes to auction in France.
The classic Type 57S Atalante was discovered by the relatives of English doctor Harold Carr shortly after he died in 2007. Carr was said to have driven the Bugatti up until 1960 before parking it in his garage and leaving it there for nearly a half century.
When it was discovered by relatives the Bugatti had been under inches of dust but it was quickly recognized to be one of the most sought-after vehicles by car collectors.
The Bugatti had originally belonged to Earl Howe, the first president of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, but after he sold it the car changed hands several times before Carr purchased the vehicle in 1955.
Auction house Bonhams has posted a sales description that reads “The new owner will have the pleasure of firing up [engine] 26S and hearing that turbine-like sound that so excited Earl Howe when he collected this car from Sorel in 1937.” It continues, "Once again [chassis] 57502, a true supercar with impeccable credentials, emerges to take its place on the world stage."
