Ryan Howard Signs Three-Year Deal with Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed first-baseman Ryan Howard to a three-year deal worth $54 million, avoiding an arbitration case that had been scheduled for later this week.

Howard, the 2006 National League MVP, had been looking for $18 million for the 2009 season but the Phillies offered the slugger a $14 million deal before settling on the new contract.

The 29-year-old was an integral part of the Phillies World Series club last year as he led the major leagues in home runs with 48 and RBIs with a total of 146.
