Yemen Releases 170 Men Suspected of al-Qaeda Ties

Yemen has released 170 men that had been arrested on suspicion of having ties with terrorist organization al-Qaeda.

According to reports the men were released on Friday and Saturday after they signed pledges to not engage in terrorism. In the past Yemeni officials have relied on powerful tribal leaders to ensure released prisoners adhered to their pledges.

Al-Qaeda recently announced that it was using Yemen as its base for activities across the Arabian peninsula. The terrorist organization has a strong presence in the northern territories of Yemen and the relatively weak Yemini government has been unable to halt their progress.
