Virginity tied to divorce rates

By: Daun Lee

A study conducted by the University of Iowa found that there is a link between the age a woman loses her virginity and their divorce rates.

The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Marriage and Family. Researchers who surveyed over 3,000 women found that women who lost their virginity in their teens had a higher rate of divorce than women who waited. Thirty one percent of the women who became sexually active in their teens were divorced within five years. Forty seven percent of these women were divorced within 10 years.

Some of the women surveyed had unwanted sexual experiences in their teens which have affected their ability to maintain intimate relationships. The negative impact unwanted sex has detrimentally affects a woman’s ability to develop relationship skills. Without relationship skills these women may find themselves headed to a divorce lawyer.

In contrast women who waited to have sex have a 15 percent divorce rate within the first five years and 27 percent in ten years.

The study did not evaluate the divorce rates of men who lost their virginity in their teens.

Over two-thirds of the nation’s divorces are initiated by the woman, aided by a divorce attorney. In a divorce, there are things that must be decided like division of marital assets and custody of children. A divorce lawyer has the experience necessary to obtain the best settlement for the divorcing parties they represent.
