At least 5 men suspected of being CIA informants have been arrested and questioned by Pakistani authorities. Unnamed U.S. and Pakistani officials have confirmed the arrests were made over the past several weeks and all but one of the detainees have been released. The alleged informants were accused of giving the CIA information that ultimately led to the May 2 killing of Osama bin Laden by a team of U.S. Navy SEALs.
The detainees reportedly included a Pakistani Army doctor and the owner of a safe house that was allegedly used by the CIA.
A senior Pakistani official said the arrests were not meant as retaliation against the suspected informants. He said intelligence officials only wanted to know what the men knew because U.S. officials had not been forthcoming about what led them bin Laden. "You should put (the detentions) in the context of the point we have been making all along: We will give you information, we will cooperate on intelligence. However, you will not go and do things behind our backs," the Wall Street Journal quoted the official as saying.
