Seeded No. 2 in the tournament, Clijsters said that she withdrew because she injured her right foot at the Unicef Open on Tuesday.

"At this moment I feel frustrated that it has to happen now before one of my favorite tournaments," said Clijsters. "I've always enjoyed being a part of the Wimbledon atmosphere but I have no other choice now but to rest, recover and to not play tennis for a few weeks."

Wimbledon starts on Monday. Clijsters has never won a Wimbledon title before.

"In about a month, Kim will resume training and start rebuilding," said her management company. "She wants to prepare the best way possible for the U.S. tour later this summer, with the U.S. Open as the main goal."

Clijsters is a 3-time U.S. Open champion who won her first Australian Open title this year. She has never won the French Open or Wimbledon.
