Death Toll from Australian Wildfires Continue to Soar, PM Accuses Arsonists of “Mass Murder”

The death toll from Australia’s worst wildfires in history has continued to climb as reports have now placed the number at 171 in the state of Victoria and that will likely rise significantly by the time firefighters extinguish all the blazes.

While wildfires are common in Australia the nature of some of those fires indicated that arsonist were to blame and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has now equated the disaster to “mass murder” as entire towns have been consumed by the fires.

Addressing the devastation that has scored his area Victoria State Premier John Brumby stated, “We have had whole communities just completely wiped out, completely obliterated, by what people would describe as literally a fireball that just came over the hills and devoured everything before them.”

The Australian wildfires were fueled by high temperatures, dry conditions and unpredictable winds and firefighter shad little chance to contain the blazes. Several of those killed were said to have been trapped in their cars as they tried to escape from the flames.

Firefighters caught a break on Monday as temperatures dropped but forecasters have warned that that could change soon, placing added pressure on officials to get things under control.
