Boy Scouts Popcorn Recall Issued Due to Salmonella Contamination

Popcorn products sold by Boy Scouts in fund raising drives has been recalled due to the salmonella contamination at a Georgia peanut plant, which also forced a recall of many other peanut products including crackers, ice cream and dog treats.

The Weaver Popcorn Co. voluntarily issued a recall for Trail’s End Carmel Corn with Peanuts with code dates of January 18, 2008 through July 23, 2009.

“Although Weaver Popcorn has received no complaints or reports of any illness related to this product, we are taking this precautionary action out of an abundance of caution,” said Michael Weaver, president of Weaver Popcorn.

The salmonella outbreak at the Peanut Corporation of America first came to light last month after nearly 500 people were sickened after eating contaminated peanut products made by the company. More than 1000 products have been recalled. At least 8 deaths have been linked to the outbreak.

Federal officials are investigating the Peanut Corporation after evidence surfaced showing the company knew some of their products were contaminated with salmonella when they were shipped to buyers.
