UN to Resume Delivery of Aid to Gaza Strip

Less than a week after halting the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip the United Nations said it will resume its operations following Israel’s elections on Tuesday.

The UN had halted delivery of aid last Thursday after accusing Hamas of seizing large shipments of rice and flour intended for struggling Palestinians. The Palestinians are relying almost exclusively on UN aid following the three-week conflict between Hamas and Israel.

That three-week conflict left more than 1,300 Palestinians dead, 50,000 homeless and a large percentage of the population without water and food. Israel has maintained their blockade on the Gaza Strip and has continued to target tunnels used by smugglers to bring in food, medicine and weapons from Egypt.

Despite facing what is considered by many to be a humanitarian crisis Hamas has made it difficult for aid to flow to those in need and have refused to allow several truckloads of relief aid to reach its destination.
