Beijing Luxury Hotel Destroyed by Fire

A newly constructed, unoccupied luxury hotel in Beijing, China was destroyed Monday night by a massive fire. The blaze at the 30-story Mandarin Oriental Hotel began around 9 p.m. and continued to burn for over an hour.

“It seems like virtually the whole building is burned,” says CNN’s Beijing bureau chief Jaime FlorCruz.

The fire began in the final hours of the Chinese lunar new year while people across the city celebrated with fireworks. The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

The hotel was scheduled to open last year but it was postponed until this year.
