New
York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has admitted to using
performance-enhancing drugs during a three-year period while he played for the Texas
Rangers.
Rodriguez
was facing allegations of using the performance-enhancing drugs following a
report that placed his name on a list of 103 other MLB players who tested
positive for steroids in 2003. The names of those players were never supposed
to be released but Rodriguez’s name was leaked and after initially offering no comment
the three-time AL MVP has admitted to using the drugs.
Speaking
to ESPN’s Peter Gammons on Monday A-Rod acknowledged his steroid use stating, “When
I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I needed to
perform, and perform at a high level every day. Back then, [baseball] was a
different culture. It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. I
wanted to prove to everyone I was worth being one of the greatest players of
all time.”
Rodriguez
went on to say “I did take a banned substance. For that, I’m very sorry and
deeply regretful.” The 33-year-old then stated “all my years in New York have
been clean.”
