An
Italian woman who had been in a vegetative state for 17 years following a car accident and was at the center
of a controversial right-to-die case has passed away.
The father of Eluana Englaro had won the support of the Italian courts and had planned on removing his daughter from her feeding tube when Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stepped in and ordered doctors to continue feeding the 38-year-old.
Berlusconi’s
drafted an order for the doctors to continue their care but President Giorgio
Napolitano refused to sign the decree and on Friday doctors began to withhold food
from Englaro.
