While he's missing the U.S. Open this week due to injury, Tiger Woods still will have a chance to win a U.S. golf championship this year if he enters the U.S. Putting Tour Championship scheduled for September 26 - October 2 at The Crossings in Carlsbad, California.
"We officially tweeted out an invitation to Tiger today," said U.S. Putting Tour founder and president, Jim Hartley. "We'd love to have him at our inaugural USPT Championship in September."
The national
putting championship is open to professional golfers and amateurs. Professionals will compete for a $10,000 first prize and a shot at $100,000 in a 2012 World Putting Tour Championship event, into which the 2011 USPT winner gains an automatic entry.
Amateurs will compete for merchandise prizes and will battle the professionals head-to-head for the USPT Championship trophy and the title of America's Best Putter. Men and women will compete together. The
putting tournament is open to all golfers ages 13 and older.
Hartley indicated that the majority of professionals participating in the championship are expected to be PGA club professionals and assistants, as well as mini-tour players from tours in the Southwest U.S. and players from the Nationwide Tour, which wraps up a Southern California event on September 25.
Golfers can enter the championship directly at the USPuttingTour.com website or by winning qualifying tournaments around the country. These
putting events can be hosted by club professionals, men's and ladies' clubs, charities and golf entrepreneurs.
