South Africa Announces Date for General Elections

President Kgalema Motlanthe has announced that South Africa will hold their general elections on April 22.

While many believe African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma to win the presidency he could face serious challenges from a rival political group that split from the ANC shortly after former President Thabo Mbeki was forced to resign.

Motlanthe was named president after Mbeki resigned as Zuma was not eligible for the position at the time.

Zuma has been at the center of a corruption charges but the ANC leader has denied any guilt. Those charges directly affected Mbeki as he was accused by a judge of interfering in the trial for political reasons.

Many influential members of the ANC broke from the party after Mbeki resigned and formed the Congress of the People. Due to the support and influence of the new party many expect the COPE to prevent the ANC from attaining a two-thirds majority in parliament.
